What is Infant Massage?Infant massage is an old-fashioned practice that has been around for thousands of years in many cultures. New parents know how instinctual it is to reach out and touch your baby. Touch is as necessary to a baby as is food.
Studies show that the more a culture touches and loves its infants, the less violent that culture is (not that we need studies to tell us that...). Studies also show that the more we experince intimacy as infants, the more we are capable of intimacy as adults.
Communication with your baby
The practice of Infant Massage is based on communication with your baby. There is a wonderful relationship that develops when parents massage their baby. Babies love to be naked and have the freedom to kick legs and arms; they also love to be in such close proximity with adults and receive the natural stimulation from the interaction.
What we do in class
In class, we take the time to connect with our baby, and each week we massage a different part of the body until we cover the entire body. We also learn the kind of touch that is most appropriate, and how to continue massaging our growing child.
Both parents are encouraged to attend, massage their baby and experience the transformation that takes place. It can be a time treasured by the whole family, a time for everyone to relax.
When it is offeredInfant Massage classes are offered when there is a demand for it, and they are limited to 5-7 moms (or 5 families) & babies. I also offer private classes to couples in their home.
The class format is typically 3-5 classes of 1 hour. You will receive handouts that describe the strokes and the sequence, as well as oil for baby, and other handouts pertinent to the subject. There will be time to ask questions and/or discuss various topics.

Amazing Babies: moving in the first year by Beverly Stokes
This is a great video that follows a group of children during their first year. It provides the parent/caregiver a perspective of baby development, containing baby movement sequences grouped into pre-locomotion and locomotion sections. There is also a book by the same name.
