LindsayPrenatal Yoga

"It has taken me a few days to get this to you, but I wanted to let you know I had my baby on Saturday! She is perfect! Thanks for the yoga, it really helped. The breathing made the labor a lot easiser & I only had to push for 21 min before she was born!". ~ Carrie

Yoga and Pregnancy

I believe that prenatal yoga is one of the most valuable form of birth preparation for a woman. Pregnancy is such a physical adventure, and so is yoga, but both are so much more, affecting our whole lives forever. Yoga is particularly suited for pregnancy, a time of transitions, a time when you can learn to surrender and allow your body and mind to open and relax.

When to start

Women come to prenatal yoga at any time during their pregnancy, from as soon as they find out they are pregnant to the end of their pregnancy. Typically though, most women start attending at around 8-12 wks. Starting anytime is fine if you feel good and have gotten approval from your care provider. Special considerations are given to women that have experienced miscarriages, or are in some way are concerned about their physical exertion. Please call me as I can offer some advice in this regard.

I often recommend taking it easy during the first trimester and listening to what your body needs at this critical time. Stay home and nap if you feel tired. All of your baby's organs develop now, and that requires an incredible amount of energy on your part! (Typically women sleep 13-14 hrs a day during the first trimester...).

What we do in class

We practice seated stretching poses, a modified standing asana series to strengthen, build endurance and help with balance. The standing poses improve blood circulation, stimulate digestion & elimination and leave us invigorated and energized. Included also are hip and pelvic stretches as well as gentle backbends. Lengthening of the spine is emphasized, as well as extension and release of the back. Some forward bends are explored, as well as squats for the appropriate pregnancy stage. Poses are modified according to each woman's level and ability.

Benefits

We can gain immense benefits by practicing yoga during this phase of our lives. Pregnancy impacts us on many levels, and yoga can come to our aid by helping us relax, teach us body awareness and relieve the aches and discomforts of pregnancy. Even practicing once a week can help alleviate tiredness, back pain, nausea & anxiety, and can prepare us for birthing and mothering. Beginners and experienced yoginis welcome! Also check the FAQs for more info before you come to class!
