Shanie's Birth StoryTeague Miller Zimmer arrived Friday morning, March 16th (my due date) after a very dramatic and fast labor. He's a shrimp by our family's standards - just 8lbs 1oz and 20 inches. He's wonderful and Aiden is the sweetest big brother.
I had been dilated to 4 cm for almost two weeks and was having many days of strong contractions that were basically false labor over and over. On Thursday the 15th the contractions got stronger and we went to the hospital around 8 pm. At 1 am I still hadn't dilated any more so we decided to induce with Pitocin. At 4 am I was at 6 cm and at 5:30 am I was at 7 cm. The contractions were pretty intense and I used a lot of squatting and stuff from yoga to get through them. I don't know that I could have gone drug free without those tools from yoga.
Teague's heart rate was dipping a little with each contraction and at 5:45 my midwife stepped out to talk to the peds doctors. She had just checked me and I was still at 7 cm and she figured I would be ready to deliver in about an hour. When they stepped back in the room at 6:00 I was standing and then it felt like a 50 pound rock dropped down on my cervix. I fell into a squat and started to pass out. They put me up on the bed and Teague's head was visible so she attached a heart rate monitor to it because his heart rate dropped to half its normal rate, broke my water and then they flipped me over to my hands and knees and told me to push and he was out in less than 5 minutes! Basically I went from 7 cm to delivering him in 15 minutes. It was overwhelming and a little scary, but he was just fine within moments and he's perfect! I really think that much of what we did in yoga helped me focus my energy and my strength.
