VIcki's story

Just letting you know that today we became the very proud parents of Matthias Kai Schroeder, or simply just Matt. He was 5.5 lbs and 19 inches, so he's a little on the small side (born at 38 weeks) but what he lacks in size he sure makes up for in spirit. Both mom and baby are doing great so from here the focus is on keeping Matt fed and warm - then we can go surfing ;-)

from Vicki, a few days later......

I had my c-section on Wed July 16th at 38 weeks and Matthias Kai Schroeder was born at 10:15am. Due to placenta issues Matt had to come out a week earlier than originally planned and came out a little fellow - just 5lbs5oz but 19 inches tall. He let out a beautiful wail when he came out and despite his size passed all tests with flying colors.

All went well with the surgery though out of nowhere I suddenly had high blood pressure (which was perfect a week earlier!!). This meant some extra meds, a lot of monitoring during recovery and staying in the hospital an extra day but otherwise caused no problems. What I learned: expect the unexpected!!

I second Amanda's praise (Amanda had written an email about OSHU, see next story) of the staff at OHSU who were fantastic. They were well prepared for the possible complications with my delivery (bleeding, etc) which thankfully never materialized. They were also stellar in their breastfeeding support and that is going very well for us.

I am recovery very well and have been surprised at how quick the recovery has been for a c-section. Though I must admit I was not quite as tough as Amanda when it came to pain meds during the week or so after delivery :)
